Marilyn Pattison graduated as an occupational therapist in 1975 and has predicated her extensive experience and knowledge in providing assistance and support to both individuals and the wider community based on the following principles:
- Self sufficiency
Throughout her career Marilyn’s unique experience as both a successful occupational therapy practitioner and an experienced business manager has allowed her to better identify both the needs of the client and the organisation or community of the individual. This results in enabling the client to live a meaningful life.
This approach has ensured that Marilyn has become involved in various companies to help injured workers return to work with a minimum of disruption, develop injury prevention programmes (minimising the risk to workers in the first place) and helping people with chronic injuries to live a more meaningful life, whilst helping to minimise the longer term burden/cost to society.
Marilyn’s initial success lead her to employ additional allied health professionals and rehabilitation consultants who want to use their skills to the benefit of the community through the enablement of the individual within the community – either directly or through an employer.
The application of the above principles has also seen Marilyn share her knowledge and skills both around Australia through her involvement in the various Australian Occupational Therapy associations and also worldwide as the President of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT).
Marilyn works with the WFOT Executive Management Team across a broad range of projects and ongoing activities including assisting with the development of the profession in countries where it currently does not exist.
Some of these activities include the
- Development of disaster preparedness and response packages and resources to support the survivors in the longer term (after the early response organisations have moved on),
- Working on a range of projects with the World Health Organisation including the Healthy Workplaces Framework and
- Providing business support and training to occupational therapy organisations to help ensure their long term viability.
Among her achievements, Marilyn has been a recipient of the OT Australia National Award, a finalist in the Telstra Business woman of the Year and is also a recipient of the Sylvia Docker Award from OT Australia – the highest award for an occupational therapist’s contribution to the profession in Australia.
Internationally Marilyn has been conferred an Honorary Life Membership of the Swedish Occupational Therapy Association.
Marilyn has also received numerous invitations to present as a keynote speaker and Workshop facilitator (in both business management & clinical subjects) from mature & emerging occupational therapy organisations around the world.
